Bureau of Land Management - Cross Bar Management Area

Who We Are

The Cross Bar Management Area (CMA) is 12,000 acres of short-grass prairie.  It has been encroached upon by honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and tree cholla cactus (Cylindropuntia imbricata) and various invasive grass species.  It is surrounded in every direction by private lands.  As a result, most people in Amarillo do not know the CMA exists and that it is public land.  It is a gem in the Texas Panhandle that should be conservatively used by the general public for its outdoor recreation values.

The goals for the Cross Bar are complete habitat restoration, native species reintroductions, primarily the American bison, increase public access through the construction of a public access road, and increase recreation usage: hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and general naturizing.

We are looking for people that are willing to volunteer working outdoors.  Volunteer opportunities include: assistance in fence construction and removal; improving, removing, or construction of wildlife infrastructure; surveying wildlife; inventory and monitoring of plants; archaeological surveying; herbicide applications on invasive plants; erecting and removing signage.

What We Do

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is a land management agency under the United States Department of the Interior.  The BLM manages over 240 million acres of land throughout the western United States for multiple use resources.  The Amarillo Field Office is located in downtown Amarillo and is responsible for the management of one of the worlds largest helium production facilities known as the Cliffside Gas Field and manages the only BLM land in the entire state of Texas known as the Cross Bar Management Area.

The mission of the BLM is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of current and future generations.
