Who We Are

Enhabit is focused on providing dignity and comfort to patients at the end of life. Hospice is more than just symptom and pain management; it is a philosophy of care designed to treat every physical, spiritual and emotional need of a patient and their loved ones.

What We Do

Enhabit volunteers will be provided with training to ensure they have a good understanding of what hospice is and what their role in a patient's life would be. It can be emotional, but the training helps the volunteer prepare for it. Volunteers are the backbone of hospice.  Our patients live in the Amarillo/Canyon area. Some at home, others in assisted living centers or skilled nursing homes. Our patents are typically in our care for around 6 months or so. Every hospice journey is different. So, what is hospice? We help patients with terminal illness live their remaining time in peace with dignity and comfort. We see to the patient's medical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Unfortunately, not every patient has a strong support system in place, a shoulder to turn to. The dying process may produce feelings of isolation and fears of alienation in many patients. After someone is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, it is not uncommon for some friends and family members to develop feeling of fear and/or anxiety about interacting with a hospice patient. In turn this may result in a tendency to withdraw from the patient at the most critical time when support and love is needed most.
There are many ways to volunteer. In a way it is kind of like adopting a grandparent in their time of need. Volunteers can just sit and visit, play games, read stories, etc. the possibilities are endless. Volunteers can pick how many patients they see, for example they can see and spend an hour a week with just one person, or they can pick a community and go do shorter visits to multiple patients. If a volunteer would rather send letters and cards instead of going in person that is an option as well. The sky is the limit. The time, days and frequency of volunteering is completely up to the volunteer, so it works great with school and work. The requirement is that a volunteer can not go past 120days without being active.
In addition to training, each volunteer would need to provide two references, submit to a drug test and undergo a background check, this to ensure our patients safety. Our volunteers are treated like staff.
