Volunteer: Garden Volunteers

We need volunteers to help us keep the Gardens beautiful. Each week we have many tasks that volunteers help with such as dead-heading plants, weeding, planting, moving plants, and other activities necessary to help our Gardens grow. Most volunteers come out on Thursday afternoons at 1 to pitch in with the tasks needed to be completed. But other volunteers come out on other days to work in their favorite Garden.

Our Gardens rely on the dedication and passion of volunteers to thrive and flourish. Whether you have a green thumb or are looking to learn more about gardening, there is a place for you in our community of volunteers. From tending to the vibrant blooms to nurturing the soil, each task contributes to the beauty and serenity of our Gardens.

Join us as we come together to make a difference in our shared oasis. If Thursdays don't work for you, feel free to pick a day that suits your schedule best and immerse yourself in the joy of working in your favorite Garden. Together, we can cultivate a space that inspires and uplifts all who visit.

Volunteer: Board Member

Dear Potential Board Member,

We warmly invite you to join the Amarillo Depot, an organization dedicated to preserving our city's rich history and shaping a vibrant future. Here's a concise overview of who we are, our vision, expectations, and essential details about board participation:

Our History:

The Amarillo Depot's roots are embedded in the captivating history of the AT&SF Railway and its impact on Amarillo, the Panhandle, and surrounding areas. Our core mission is To create a museum of the first class to collect and preserve materials relating to the history of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and its influence on the economic and societal history of the City of Amarillo, the Panhandle, and surrounding areas.

Our Vision:

The Santa Fe Historical Museum is dedicated to preserve and share the history and impact of the Santa Fe railroad to Amarillo and surrounding Panhandle areas. Our vision extends beyond preservation; we aim to create a captivating, interactive attraction where families and friends of all generations can unite to celebrate our shared history. By joining our board, you will play a pivotal role in shaping this vision and steering the course of our community's future.

Expectations:

Time Commitment: Active participation is vital for board members, which includes attending our monthly board meetings. These meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in the Santa Fe Building on Polk, from 3:00 PM to 4:15 PM. Board packets are delivered by email the Friday prior to meetings.  Members are expected to have read packet in full, attend meetings regularly to maintain the flow of our work, with a maximum allowance of three missed meetings per year.  Additional time commitment varies depending on committee(s) and additional jobs. Committees: We encourage board members to actively participate in at least one committee. Your commitment to these committees will drive the progress of the Amarillo Depot and contribute significantly to our shared success. Financial Support: While no specific financial contribution is required, we encourage board members to make at least an annual donation that holds personal significance. Foundations look at the percentage of board members who are donors when evaluating grant applications. It is more about how many than how much.

Positive Ambassadorship:

In addition to these expectations, we invite board members to serve as ambassadors for our organization. Your enthusiasm, support, and advocacy within the community are vital in furthering our mission.

We believe that your expertise, passion, and commitment can substantially impact our organization's success. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to work together to preserve Amarillo's history and co-create an exciting future.

Should you be interested in joining our board or have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to reach out to Jamie Beckham at jamie@amarillodepot.com. You can also apply to be a board member here:

Volunteer: Wish Granter Volunteer Needed! -- (Virtual Opportunity)

We depend on people like you! Do you have a few hours each week? Maybe a few days each week? Then you can help bring the rejuvenation of wish experiences to kids with critical illness. You can join a network of more than 1,000 caring people, across the 161-counties this chapter serves in Texas, who make it possible for Make-A-Wish kids to live their one true wish.

Wish Granter Role -

Wish granters work with families over the course of 9-12 months volunteering about an hour a month per wish child.

Wish granters are trained individuals who meet with our children to determine their wish. These volunteers work closely with the Make-A-Wish staff to make each wish come true. Wish granters will have the opportunity to meet with wish families virtually (FaceTime, Zoom Meetings, HouseParty, Phone Calls, etc.) Wishes can be granted in just several days, or may take up to a year to complete. A specialized training program is provided before contact is made with a wish family. We are currently looking for wish granters who are fluent in both English and Spanish. We serve a large percentage of Spanish speaking with families, and with out Spanish speaking wish granters, we are not able to to quickly meet the needs of those Spanish speaking families. If you are fluent in both English and Spanish, please consider becoming a wish granter.

Don’t live in Texas? Please visit our national website at https://wish.org/ to find a local Make-A-Wish chapter near you.

Volunteer: Crisis Volunteer Advocate

    Hey everybody!
As the new Volunteer Advocate Coordinator of Family Support Services, I am currently recruiting volunteers to help support and advocate on behalf of survivors of sexual assault. This is a responsibility that is best taken on by our unique and diverse Amarillo community. Without our volunteers, our program wouldn't even be half as strong. Do you want to make a difference? Are you compassionate? Good at listening? Are you looking for a flexible way to make a difference in our community and others' lives?   If you answered “Yes,” Family Support Services wants you to be a part of our team!    Volunteer Advocates work directly with victims of sexual assault and family violence. When a sexual assault or family violence victim presents at the NWTH-ER or The Bridge, a Volunteer Advocate is dispatched to provide emotional support for the victim and his/her family members. The Volunteer Advocate stays with the victim throughout the immediate crisis, providing crisis intervention, emotional support, and information about services available. The FSS Volunteer Advocate Program is a Certified Sexual Assault Training Program administered through the Office of Attorney General. The training provides Volunteer Advocates 40 hours of training (10 of those hours are accompanying an experienced Volunteer Advocate).   For more information, contact Volunteer Coordinator Alexis Roberts at 806.342.2529 or aroberts@fss-ama.org.

Did you know that Family Support Services operates the only crisis hotline in Potter and Randall Counties for those experiencing sexual assault, trafficking or family violence? Our hotline received almost 2,500 calls last year.

Volunteer Hotline Interventionist answer the Hotline for Sexual Assaults and Domestic Violence and provide callers with emotional support, education about the dynamics and impact of abuse,  and often provide someone with the emotional space to decide what their life could look like free of the abuse. These calls can be life changing for someone.

If this sounds interesting, we want you to be a part of our team! We will provide you with 20 hours of training. Shifts are flexible based on your availability and a perfect fit for a college student who can work on class assignments between calls and still make a positive impact in our community.

For more information, contact Director of Emergency Housing Services Michelle Shields at 806.342.2576 or mshields@fss-ama.org. Online application at Family Support Services website.

Volunteer: Help Build a Ramp and Change a Life

Come make a real difference in the life of a fellow Panhandle area resident! We build wheelchair ramps for people that need here in the Amarillo and the Panhandle area at no cost to them. We provide tools (you can bring your own if you prefer) and guide all skill levels through the construction of the ramp. Usually requires 3-4 hours and the result is truly life-changing for the resident as they have the freedom to get out of their home on their own once again. Come help out! Individuals and groups are welcome! Questions? Just ask.

Our volunteers say it's the most satisfying work
they have ever done; liberating people imprisoned
in their homes, unable to get out because of
the front steps that most take for granted.

The Texas Ramp Project - Panhandle area works with the City of Amarillo, social-services organizations, government agencies, and healthcare services to identify clients who need a ramp. We are 100% volunteer staffed, relying on individual donations and our corporate partners to provide the funding, building materials, and facilities for our work.

Check out or Facebook Page - www.facebook.com/trpamarillo to see what we do and you can be a part of.

Volunteer: Volunteers

Volunteers Needed: We appreciate our Amarillo SPCA volunteers.  We have only four employees, two of which are part-time. We could simply not survive without dedicated volunteers who provide our many animals with love and attention. We would like to encourage "pet-lovers" to volunteer.  You must be 18 years of age or older at the shelter, and 16 at PetSmart. Help us any way you can. Without continued support of our community, we wouldn't be able to keep our shelter open.  Your volunteer time will be greatly appreciated; by us and by the animals who will reward you with their love.  If you are unable to donate your time, perhaps consider a monetary donation.
