Volunteer: Amarillo Area LOSS Team Advocate

Position Summary:

Advocates under the direction of the Community Mental Health Program Manager, will provide advocacy services to Survivors of Suicide (family members and close friends of someone who died by suicide). These services include emotional support, education, information and referrals as well as check-in calls at various occasions and timeframes. 


Qualifications:

1. Must be at least 21 years of age.

2. Ability to work independently and responsibly.

3. Ability to work empathically, with people of all ages, sexual orientations, gender identifications, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds in a professional, non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner. 

4. Must complete the LOSS Training Session in its entirety.

5. Valid Texas Driver's License and proof of auto insurance. 

6. Personal suicide experience is no less than one year prior to training state date. 

7. Must complete and pass a background check. 


Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. To be available for a minimum of 1 shift per week.

2. To respond to SOS within 30 minutes of dispatch call.

3. To provide clients and their families with emotional support, compassion, information, and referrals as needed and to remain with the SOS until the immediate crisis has ended.

4. To adhere to the LOSS Program and Amarillo Public Health rules and procedures.

5. To submit all required paperwork obtained during the client engagement within 2 business days.

6. To maintain the confidentiality of the client and LOSS Program information.

7. Attend monthly in-service debriefing meetings as scheduled.
